Bone Density Test in Singapore

Most people do not think about their bones until something breaks. But by the time a fracture occurs, significant bone loss may have already taken place. A bone density test gives you a clear picture of where your bone health stands before that happens.

At T&T Medical Group, our dedicated Osteoporosis Centre offers bone density testing in Singapore, along with clinical interpretation and follow-up support from a nurse educator.

What Is a Bone Density Test?

A bone density test measures the amount of mineral, primarily calcium, in your bones. A higher mineral content means denser, stronger bones. A lower reading suggests the bones may be more susceptible to fracture, even from a minor fall or bump.

The most widely used method is a bone mineral densitometry (BMD) scan, which uses low-level X-ray technology to measure bone density at key sites, typically the spine and hip. The result is expressed as a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult.

The test is non-invasive, painless, and does not require any special preparation.

Diagnostic imaging, including bone density scans, is conveniently handled by our in-building partner facilities, allowing our doctors to focus on interpreting your results, assessing your risks, and mapping out your long-term health guidance.

Who Should Get a Bone Density Test?

Bone density loss often occurs without any symptoms. Many people are unaware they have osteoporosis (a condition in which bones become progressively less dense and more prone to fracture) until a fracture occurs. Screening allows for earlier detection and, where needed, earlier intervention.

A bone density test is particularly recommended for:

What to Expect During Your Bone Density Test

The BMD scan at T&T is straightforward and typically completed within a single visit.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is required. You remain fully clothed throughout.

The Scan

You lie on a padded table while a scanning arm passes slowly over the lower spine and hip. The procedure is quick, painless, and involves only minimal radiation exposure.

Results

The findings are interpreted by our clinical team and discussed with you either at the same visit or at a follow-up appointment.

Understanding Your Bone Density Test Results

What Is a Normal Score?

Your BMD result is expressed as a T-score. The T-score compares your bone density to the average peak bone density of a healthy young adult:

T-Score What it means
-1.0 or above
Normal bone density
Between -1.0 and -2.5
Osteopenia (reduced bone mass not yet classified as osteoporosis, but may indicate increased future risk)
-2.5 or below
Osteoporosis

What Do Low Scores Mean?

A low T-score does not mean a fracture is inevitable. It indicates that your bones may be less dense than the healthy young adult reference range.

What that action looks like depends on the severity of the result, your age, your medical history, and other risk factors. For some patients, lifestyle measures such as dietary changes, calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and weight-bearing exercise may be sufficient. For others, medication may be recommended.

What Happens After Your Test?

Once your results are available, we will explain what they mean in plain terms. If further investigation or treatment is indicated, our dedicated nurse educator will guide you through the next steps.

Where appropriate, T&T may recommend:

If you are also being assessed or treated for osteoarthritis, joint pain, diabetes, hypertension, or other chronic conditions at T&T, your bone health results will be considered as part of your broader care plan.

Why Choose T&T Medical Group for Bone Density Testing?

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on your specific insurance policy and the clinical indication for the test. Some plans may cover BMD scanning where there is a documented clinical reason, such as a fracture history or confirmed risk factors. We recommend checking with your insurer before your appointment. Our team can advise on what documentation may be needed to support a claim.

This depends on your initial result and whether you are receiving treatment. As a general guide, patients on osteoporosis medication are typically rescanned every one to two years to monitor response. For those with osteopenia who are not on treatment, an interval of two to five years is common, depending on how low the initial score is. If your first result is normal and you have no significant risk factors, your next scan may not be needed for several years.

Yes. BMD scanning involves only a very low level of radiation exposure, significantly less than a standard chest X-ray. It is considered safe for the vast majority of adults. If you have any concerns about the procedure, speak to us before your appointment.

No. You can book directly without a referral from a GP or specialist.
